  • IMDEA Nanociencia IDEAL programme receives € 1.1M from the COFUND Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.
  • IMDEA Nanociencia is among the 11 Spanish entities awarded with this grant, and the only one in the region of Madrid.
  • The IDEAL programme aims to attract talented postdoctoral researchers to carry out research of excellence in any of the research areas developed at the Institute.

Madrid, 21st of May 2021. The IDEAL programme (IMDEA-Nanociencia Postdoctoral Programme in Nanoscience) for attracting talent at IMDEA Nanociencia has been awarded a COFUND Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) grant for the 2020 call. Specifically, it has received €1.1 million, out of the €100 million awarded in this programme. IMDEA Nanociencia is one of the 11 Spanish entities to receive this grant in the 2020 call.

Research areas

IDEAL is a new fellowship programme promoted by Fundación IMDEA Nanociencia that over 5 years aims to attract 12 talented postdoctoral researchers to undertake excellent research in any of the areas of research carried out at the institute: (i) Organic nanosystems for light harvesting and energy conversion, (ii) Fundamental properties of 2D materials, (iii) Nanomedicine against cancer and infection; (iv) Nanomagnetism and critical raw materials and (v) Solid state quantum devices for information technologies and (iv) the Technology Transfer Platform.

A world-class research experience

The key objetictive of the programme is to offer fellows a well-balanced research independence and mentoring from experienced researchers with access to an excellent infrastructure of the highest level for the pursuit of projects in nanoscience and nanotechnology. IMDEA Nanociencia will provide a full research training and career development programme, with a series of training and career development activities and opportunities. IDEAL programme aims to provide a dynamic research community and a lively international atmosphere focused on interdisciplinary research.

Candidates will carry out projects of 30 months and they will choose a partner organization to develop a secondment (between 2 and 6 months). The intersectoral, international partner organizations will offer the fellows a chance to build their curriculum, gaining experience outside of an academic environment if chosen.

The requisites for postdoctoral candidates to join this programme is to have gained a PhD degree in the previous four years -at the date of application- and to not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the last 3 years before the call deadline.

With the COFUND MSCA seal

COFUND (Co-funding of Regional, National and International Programmes) is framed into the Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions from European Union’s Horizon 2020 Framework. It is a co-financing mechanism that aims to stimulate regional, national or international programmes to promote excellence in the research training of personnel, their mobility and the development of their professional careers.

These new projects will allow the incorporation of nearly 240 researchers into the Spanish national science and innovation system. This funding programme has a high impact at the institutional level, allowing institutions to align their policies and programmes for the incorporation of research personnel with the standards established by the European Commission in terms of human resources in research, and to improve their scientific excellence. COFUND projects help institutions with research grant programmes to improve their doctoral programmes or research staff recruitment programmes by increasing the funding associated with them.

Doing research in Madrid

Fundación IMDEA Nanociencia is a non-profit foundation created in 2006 jointly by the Regional Government of Comunidad de Madrid and the Government of Spain to shorten the distance between research and society; providing new capacity for research, technological development and innovation in the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The Foundation manages the IMDEA Nanociencia Institute, an interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to the exploration of basic nanoscience and the development of applications of nanotechnology in connection with innovative industries. The Institute is part of one of the strategic lines of UAM-CSIC Cantoblanco Campus of International Excellence, a consortium of academic and research institutions promoted by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and the Spanish Scientific Research Council (CSIC), a highly competitive world–class research environment.

IMDEA Nanociencia was awarded as “Severo Ochoa” Centre of Excellence by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness in 2017. This is the highest national recognition of scientific excellence (IMDEA Nanociencia is one of 29 centres across all disciplines) and is granted after a rigorous evaluation process carried out by an international scientific committee. Severo Ochoa Centres of Excellence are research structures which have been awarded for their high quality and competitive strategic research programmes in the frontiers of knowledge, and attractive work environments.

“Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials” was identified as one of the four technological areas to be prioritised within the Comunidad de Madrid’s Smart Specialization Strategy as part of its multi-year plan. This strategy has at its core the attraction and retention of talent, promotion of collaborative activities, strengthening infrastructures and enhancing technology transfer and stimulating innovation. The IDEAL programme sits well in this environment and takes advantage of the synergies with the regional programme.

Working at IMDEA Nanociencia guarantees access to an infrastructure of the highest level for the pursuit of research in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
