P2: Quantum materials at the nanoscale
PhD PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project targets the design of 2D molecular architectures on decoupling supports. To this aim we will exploit the synergy between on-surface synthesis and coordination chemistry on surfaces. Specific molecular precursors will be deposited on distinct decoupling supports. Two distinct strategies will be pursued: i) Sublimation at room temperature and subsequent annealing; ii) Sublimation at very low temperature on the tunneling junction and chemical synthesis by tip-induced stimuli.
The researcher will use state-of-the-art scanning probe microscopy laboratories, complemented by X-ray photoemission and adsorption spectroscopies, together with DFT and DMRG simulations.
Research collaborations will include organic chemists for the synthesis of precursors (Profs. Nazario Martín (UCM), Tomás Torres (UAM), Xinliang Feng (TU Dresden) and Diego Peña (CIQUS), theoretical physicists (Profs. Pavel Jelínek (Czech Academy of Sciences), Jonas Björk (Linköping University), Paco Guinea and José A. Silva (IMDEA Nanoscience).
APPLICANT’S REQUIREMENTS
The applicant should have a masters degree in Physics or Chemistry, with a proficiency level of English.
Previous expertise in ultra-high vacuum systems and scanning probe microscopies would be highly appreciated.
RESEARCH GROUP DESCRIPTION
The Molecular Nanoarchitectonics on Surfaces group is focused on the study of molecular compounds and nanomaterials at interphases. We take advantage of scanning probe microscopies, complemented by X-ray techniques, and theory simulations.
Our group comprises three-ultra high vacuum systems, hosting state-of-the-art variable temperature and low temperature microscopes. We also develop synchrotron campaigns with 2-4 beamtimes per year.
